Your Portion

Have you ever heard someone use the phrase, "God is my portion?" Maybe you have, and maybe you haven't. Most of us have, however, heard the term "portion" before. When someone is giving rations or dividing something among a group of people, there are portions or allotted amounts for everyone. Well, that is exactly what portion means when you hear of God being your portion. Your ration, your allotment, your dividend is GOD! Did you know that? How special is it to have God Himself as your portion. He is your reward, He is your person. He wants to be especially close to you, as a special gift to YOU!

Check out the Scriptures below that talk about God being our portion:

My flesh and my heart may fail, But God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.

I cried out to You, O LORD; I said, "You are my refuge, My portion in the land of the living."

The LORD is my portion; I have promised to keep Your words.

"The LORD is my portion," says my soul, "Therefore I have hope in Him."

The LORD is the portion of my inheritance and my cup; You support my lot.

Therefore, Levi does not have a portion or inheritance with his brothers; the LORD is his inheritance, just as the LORD your God spoke to him.

They shall have no inheritance among their countrymen; the LORD is their inheritance, as He promised them.

And it shall be with regard to an inheritance for them, that I am their inheritance; and you shall give them no possession in Israel--I am their possession.

Then the LORD said to Aaron, "You shall have no inheritance in their land nor own any portion among them; I am your portion and your inheritance among the sons of Israel."

But to the tribe of Levi, Moses did not give an inheritance; the LORD, the God of Israel, is their inheritance, as He had promised to them.

Now, take a minute to reflect on God being your portion or your inheritance. Picture the other kinds of portions of those around you. If you picture it properly, you may realize that it means that you get God as your primary gift, instead of ______________. It means that you forfeit the inheritance or portion that others get because you get something else... something better.

Looking at the Scriptures above, it is clear that the Levites had to let go of the idea of having land like the other tribes, but they had God as their portion. But God still took care of their needs through the resources of the other tribes. The reality is that if God is your portion, you will have everything you need. And wherever you are lacking, God is able to fill you up.

Have you traveled this life empty and dissatisfied, chasing the wrong portion? Have you complained about what others have, and what you are missing? Why don't you make today the day that you embrace what is yours: the heart, attention, affection, and presence of God. Reclaim your sacred portion, and live in the joy that His presence makes available to you.

Questions:

1. Is God your portion? How do you know?

2. Are you satisfied with your portion?

3. How can you better embrace your portion?

Task: Write a few of these Scriptures on sticky notes or note cards, and tape them around your room or bathroom. Remind yourself that you have a portion, quite a portion! And your portion is better than what you feel like you are missing.
